Residents of Church Hill School Condominiums are committed to the vibrant community of Lanesboro. We brought back to life an old school house built in 1917 on the city's tallest hill. The school was vacated in 1990 and purchased by Dan and Maureen Anderson in 1993. In 2007, a group of local residents and frequent Lanesboro visitors joined Dan and Maureen to transform the three-story school into 15 housing units. The project succeeded, and the condos are owned by a mix of permanent and part-time residents, including some who attended the school as children.
Our philosophy is simple. We care about each other as family, and all of us have an equal voice in condo decisions. Shared activities open to all residents include: gardening, landscaping, and a spring clean-up day that ends with a potluck. A condo workshop in the basement gives residents a place to repair a bicycle or do a craft project. Building-wide wireless broadband allows residents to work from home. Residents share the cost of contracted services like snow removal, window washing, cleaning of common areas and lawn care.
The town of Lanesboro was described by Minnesota Monthly as “a quirky crossroads of the arts and outdoors!” Lanesboro Arts, with its downtown gallery and arts programs, has contributed to Lanesboro being named one of the “100 Best Small Art Towns in America.” St.. Mane Theatre offers music and other shows from its historic stage. Lanesboro Museum displays artifacts of the city's rich history. Topping out the cultural attractions of this unique little town is the Commonweal Theatre, whose professional actors bring to life the best of drama.
Lanesboro has no stop lights or food franchises and is a great place for those who love the outdoors. Nestled among bluffs you'll find a historic village with fine dining, cozy inns, a local brew pub and festivals that celebrate art, rhubarb and Buffalo Bill. People come for camping, trout fishing and bird watching; others to canoe, kayak or tube the Root River. Many come to bike the 80 miles of paved trails on a former railroad line that passes through the middle of town. Winter welcomes cross-country skiers and snowmobilers.
When you come to Lanesboro, walk, pedal or drive up Church Hill. The view of the Root River cascading over Lanesboro dam has captivated visitors for 150 years.
